The New Media Institute (NMI) is a research and fact finding organization whose mission is to improve public understanding of issues surrounding the Internet and other forms new media communications. NMI works directly with the news media, researchers, academics, government and industry professionals and serves as a primary resource of facts, statistics and analysis.

Social Media and the Workplace

With the increasing use of social media in our society, I find myself more and more counseling business clients on issues arising from the use of social media by their employees.  We still, of course, have the standard range of employment law issues, such as wrongful discharge, employee leaves, disability discrimination, and workplace harassment.  However, social media issues have become increasingly more prominent in the workplace.

More than Half of MySpace Visitors are Now Age 35 or Older

Visitors to MySpace.com and Friendster.com generally skew older, with people age 25 and older comprising 68 and 71 percent of their user bases, respectively. Meanwhile, Xanga.com has a younger user profile, with 20 percent of its users in the 12-17 age range, about twice as high as that age segments representation within the total Internet audience.

What are Bloggers Focusing on?

The ease and appeal of blogging is inspiring a new group of writers and creators to share their voices with the world. A new, national phone survey of bloggers finds that most are focused on describing their personal experiences to a relatively small audience of readers and that only a small proportion focus their coverage on politics, media, government, or technology.
