CNN YouTube Debate Format Has Profound Affect on Politics
Published  08/6/2007 | Evolution of the Internet , New Media News , Politics Online

The CNN YouTube Democratic Candidates Debate seems to have changed the political process as we use to know it. The spectacle was a cross between an old fashioned town hall meeting, a game show and the Daily Show. Yet, it was more than entertainment. Rather, it exhibited more than glimmers of thought, sincerity and a glimpse of the candidates as people. While it was well-orchestrated, there was an element of spontaneity that could not be missed.

Considering the ambitious undertaking, this revolutionary debate format shows the enormous potential of this media process. There could have been extraordinary fireworks emanating from the candid questions, and the global press may make much ado about some of the candidates’ replies. But, I think that the only disappointment for many viewers was that it was a bit bland. Perhaps more show biz glitz through this immediate media format invigorates the political process. One CNN reviewer called the debate. “Gladys Knight and the Pips,” referring to Hilary Clinton and the other boys. Stay tuned to the the Republican side on September 17.
